Three Trends That Will Shape the Next Decade
Change happens daily and no one knows that better than a small business owner. The key is how you react to it or, better yet, anticipate it. Anticipating change is the idea behind research by Intuit, Inc. The trends identified in the research point to significant opportunities for small businesses over the next 10 years. Here are just three trends; you can view all the trends in the full report.
1. Lower barriers for starting a business. Start-up costs will become less prohibitive as technology continues down the "smaller, lighter, and smarter" path. These lower barriers will allow women in developing countries (870 million worldwide) to go to work for the first time, many of them as owners of their own businesses.
2. A level playing field. Small business owners will be able to go toe to toe with large businesses. "Variable cost infrastructures, virtual stores, the marketing reach of mobile technologies, and a contingent workforce" will allow small companies to operate a lot like the giants. The web and mobile technologies will become the great equalizer, with customers no longer knowing or caring about the size of the firm that provides their goods and services.
3. Life styles will favor local businesses. For environmental, social, and personal reasons, people are turning toward to their own communities for the goods and services they need. That investment will make their communities stronger, socially and economically.
