The Key to Innovation
College-age students are phenomenal innovators. (Think Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sergey Brin.) Recognizing that education needs to nurture innovators, some colleges are experimenting with new ways of learning. They’ve launched innovation centers where students from many disciplines are assigned a problem to solve. The team is given a deadline and space in a highly flexible, dynamic environment to do their work.
Herman Miller hosted a leadership roundtable of academics, architects, and educational associations to discuss how to support student innovation. That group came up with an extensive list of characteristics of a successful innovation environment, including flexibility; easy access to information, materials, and tools; space for prototyping and meeting; and a sense of playfulness. An environment can spark creativity to the same extent that it can squelch it. But none of the participants lost sight of the one thing in the room absolutely critical to innovation—the students themselves.
