At Lunch, Brazilians Bid Adeus to the Office (and Germs)

Sixty-two percent of Americans work through lunch. In Brazil, virtually no one does. The government there mandates hour-long lunch breaks and companies essentially kick the employees out of their offices for that hour. Security badges track employees’ entry and exit, the better to prove to the government that employees aren’t working during lunch.

That’s just one of the many cultural differences that have implications for the office environment. Incidentally, the Brazilians are likely the healthier for eating out of the office: The average desktop has 100 times more bacteria than a kitchen table.
