Reports of the Death of the Office Are Greatly Exaggerated

We used to have to go to the office. It was the only way we could share information and ideas. Now we can do that from anywhere. But people haven’t exactly fled to their home offices. A recent survey found that less than two percent of people working for large employers worldwide work from home. And most (over 60 percent) still commute to an officefour or five days a week.

While the research doesn’t say why, our experience tells us that many people realize that home comes with its own set of distractions, or that for some things nothing beats face to face. In any case, the office hasn’t become obsolete, as some predicted it would. However, the main reason to go there has changed. Now we go there to connect with coworkers. We go there for what one expert calls “accelerated serendipity” and community that happen as a result of being together. Given these new demands of the office, they must be agile workplaces that leverage the real value of place—its ability to be a catalyst for human interaction.
