We're Copycats, Emotionally (And Why That Matters)
If you’ve ever caught the yawns after watching someone else yawn, you know how we copy others’ behavior. A previously unknown class of neurons that cause a person to mimic or mirror what someone else does is now known to play an important role in human interactions. These “mirror neurons” reproduce emotions that we consciously or unconsciously detect by observing another person’s actions, collectively creating “an instant sense of shared experience.” This may help explain why face-to-face interaction improves group cohesiveness—and why people choose to go to the office, even when they have other options.
The more we learn about the human brain and about collective intelligence, the clearer it is that being in the same place is critical to collaboration. And a work environment that promotes interaction is a big help, too.
