Communication, Comfort, and Chance
We caught up with Yohei Ishii, TURBO’s CEO, in the company’s Brooklyn studio to find out how space matters to their start-up.
When you started to plan your studio, what were you looking for from your space?
Ishii: We wanted an open layout for the team, so there would never be any constraints for communication. We also realized that a meeting space was necessary, because at times, you do need to have a break from your day-to-day work environment and get into a closed environment to hash things out, or to present to the group. I think we were lucky to achieve all of that with the design of the actual space and the furniture from Herman Miller.
What has the space meant for the studio’s productivity?
Ishii: In our world—and in other industries, too—we have times when our team might have to crunch in order to hit different milestones. So during these times, when everyone is sitting at their desks for extended periods, being able to do that in a comfortable cocoon is a huge plus.
The development team sits in Embody chairs. How have they been working out?
Ishii: With the Embody chairs, we don’t hear a gripe from a single person—even the guys with the bad backs. Everyone can focus on their work for as long as they need to without getting uncomfortable. So that has been amazing.
How would it affect TURBO’s work if team members decided they were more comfortable working from home?
Ishii: Video game development—especially the types of games that we’re working on—is not a linear path. That means there is a lot of integration, a lot of happenstance, and a lot of that happens when different ideas collide in unexpected ways. There are so many moving pieces, and that’s why it goes back to the importance of having a space and structure where communication and collaboration are easy-flowing. We wanted to make sure we had a work environment that was conducive to that, and by working with Herman Miller, what we have been able to achieve together is pretty phenomenal.
