No Idea Too Big or Small in Campus Sustainability Movement
Move the trash can. That was one idea Kansas State University came up with when aiming for LEED Silver Certification for a new building on the Olathe campus. The school put all the recycling containers for things like plastic and metal close to the construction site. The trash container, on the other hand, was placed about a quarter of a mile away. The distance discouraged workers from tossing materials that could be recycled. It was a simple, cheap, and effective strategy. Ninety-five percent of the construction waste was recycled.
Green buildings are just the beginning. Students and administrators are embracing sustainability and are doing what higher education often does—experimenting, collaborating, and questioning the status quo. (Edible landscapes, anyone?) Our new paper, "Education and Sustainability: Under the Green Umbrella", explains why.
